Psalms 139 - Value of Life

Psalms is a little bit different than other scriptures in the Bible and gives us a unique perspective.  Other scriptures tend to tell us something and are written to share a story or history, but Psalms is a book of poetry and songs.  So, it gives us a unique perspective on not only what was physically happening in the world, but also what was going on in people’s heads and hearts.

Psalms 139 teaches us so many things on so many levels, but today, we are going to look at it from the perspective of how much God values life.

Life is valuable and precious to God.

God values life… all life.  In other words, if you are alive or if you have ever been alive, then you have value in God’s eyes.  And we know this from this scripture because of how much attention it says God give us and how well He knows us.  Even before we were born, He planned for our lives.  If God did not value us… if our lives were not precious to Him, then He wouldn’t take the time and energy to know us that well.

Psalms 139:1-6
1 Lord, you have searched me and known me.
2 You know when I sit down and when I stand up;
you understand my thoughts from far away.
3 You observe my travels and my rest;
you are aware of all my ways.
4 Before a word is on my tongue,
you know all about it, Lord.
5 You have encircled me;
you have placed your hand on me.
6 This wondrous knowledge is beyond me.
It is lofty; I am unable to reach it.

I love my mom.  I absolutely do.  And I know, without a doubt, that she loves me and that I am precious to her.  I know this because she tells me this often.  And when I read this scripture it sounds to me like God knows me how my mom wishes she could know me.

It says here, God knows when I sit and when I stand… He understands my thoughts, He watches my travels and looks over me when I rest… He is aware of all my ways.

When I moved to TN over 8hrs away from my parents, I know it broke my mother’s heart just a little…  Because she loves me so much, she wishes she could be with me all the time and know where I am 24hrs a day, just as many parents do.  And when I moved, it meant that she wouldn’t get to see me as much and be around me as much.  That is how precious I am to my mother.

But as precious as I am to my mother, as much as my mother loves me… God loves me even more and I am even more precious to Him.

And so are youAnd so is your neighbor And so are your friends and family.  God created us.  He is more than just a parent to us, He is our creator.  I won’t go into detail of the differences between creating a life and having a baby.  But as great a bond as is created during the 9 months of pregnancy and in all the years of being a mom or dad, there is a greater bond between a creator and His creation.  There is time and effort put into planning your life and designing who you are.  There were choices God made of what talents and eye color and hair color and all of those little things that make you who you are… And He gave them to you because it was part of His plan and His purpose for you.

Psalms 139:13-16
13 For it was you who created my inward parts;
you knit me together in my mother’s womb.
14 I will praise you
because I have been remarkably and wondrously made.
Your works are wondrous,
and I know this very well.
15 My bones were not hidden from you
when I was made in secret,
when I was formed in the depths of the earth.
16 Your eyes saw me when I was formless;
all my days were written in your book and planned
before a single one of them began.

What incredible detail and planning went into creating us.  And that makes us special. So, our lives, are valuable and precious to God.

It is an incredible gift and an incredible honor
to be a Mom or Dad

For all the moms and dads out there, consider this.

Moms, If God values life that much, how incredible of gift is it for God to place that life He so carefully planned out, in your womb, to care for, nurture and love?  What an incredible gift!

Fathers, how incredible an honor it is to be given the responsibility of being a dad to someone so valuable and precious to Jesus.

I’m going to give you an example here, that doesn’t even come close to being a good comparison.  But because it isn’t even close, I hope it shows you the magnitude of how much a child is a gift and an honor for God to place them in your care.

I have a 1973 Corvette.  It’s a pretty nice car.  It’s valuable to me.  I spent many a weekend working on that car and when I was young I spent many hours working on it with my dad.  So naturally… and I’m just being honest here… I’m not going to let any of you borrow that car.  I’m just not.  I love you and all, but I’m not going to trust you with my Vette.

About the only people, who I would let borrow my car or keep my car and drive it for any length of time… is my wife’s dad, who is a retired GM engineer and who has classic cars of his own, or my own dad, who this car used to belong to and I know how well he would take care it.

So, I hope you understand… and I think you do.  I think you understand how that car has a certain value to me, and I’m not going to let just anyone borrow it or drive it.  But as valuable as that car is to me… how much more valuable is a life to God?  Like I said, there is no comparison… and yet, as a mother and a father, He has placed that life that He cares about so much, in your care for just a little while. So, yeah, that is a precious gift and honor.

Now for those who aren’t parents.  We aren’t left out of this either… Because God has given us… all of us, parents or not, the task of going out and sharing the gospel with all of these lives that are so precious and valuable to him.  He has given us the job of teaching them and making them disciples.

What an incredible job He has given us.

We must begin to see people the way God sees people.

We just talked about how incredible a gift it is to be a mom, and it’s an incredible honor to be a dad, and it’s incredible Job each of us is given… And we learned that each one of us, is precious and valuable to God… But I wrote all of that, not to celebrate us, but rather to change how we see life and how we see other people.  How we see all people.

Every life we see…  it doesn’t matter how broken and messed up, is as valuable and as restorable as a piece of gold to God and even more so.  And this is how we need to start seeing other people.  This is how we need to view our friends and our family… especially those who are not saved, or who may be saved but who have gotten off the path.

These people are incredibly important to God.  They are incredibly precious to Him.  And guess what, He has placed them in our lives… not as an afterthought… but He had this planned out before we were even born, to place those lives who are precious and valuable to Him in our lives, so that we might share with them, the good news.  What incredible opportunity, what an incredible responsibility.

So what does that mean for us?  Consider how important your friends and family are to God and how desperately He wants a relationship with them.  And understand that you might be the vine that reaches out and connects them to the branch of Jesus.  And in fact, you might be the only one who can get to them…

Now my question for you is, have you ever invited them to church?  70-90% of people are in the church they are in because of their friends or family.  So, it’s up to you to share the Gospel with those people God has put in your life!

You are Valuable and Precious to God.
Your Friends and Family are Valuable and Precious to God.
Who does God want you to help Him connect with?
