This is the Snow Day that the Lord has made

This is the Snow Day
that the Lord Hath Made;
Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Psalm 118:24
This is the day which the Lord hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

Well, I hope you are enjoying this snow day.
You know, people have different reactions when it comes to snow days.  Some people absolutely love a snow day.  For them, there seems to be something magical about it, and it is like a free day to do whatever you want (I happen to fall into this category).

Then there are those who, the thought of a snow day is just not their idea of fun.  For them, it is like being held hostage at home… it’s cold, it’s messy, and you are stuck in 1 place.

But no matter which category you fall in…we must remember that This is the day the Lord has made, we should rejoice and be glad in it.

So how do we do this?

We just came through the Christmas season, and no doubt many of you were given gift cards…  Have you ever wondered why people give gift cards instead of cash?

One of the reasons we give gift cards instead of cash is that we are afraid that if we give someone cash, they will end up using it to pay bills or buy groceries or something like that.  Even if they have the intention of spending on themselves, sometimes it just never ends up happening….so to prevent that we give gift cards.  This way they are forced to use it on themselves, and not on bills.

So what does all of this have to do with snow days and this being a day that the Lord has made?

Psalm 23:1-2 -The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:

I think sometimes, when the Lord gives us a snow day, this is His way of making us lie down in green pastures and rest.  I like to think of it as God giving us a gift card with a very short expiration date.  And we can do one of two things with this gift card…either we can take some time to rest (take a Sabbath) or we can let it go to waste and work ourselves to death around the house or on Facebook or by watching too much TV.

Fortunately, this weekend, God has given us more than 1 snow day.  And so without a doubt, we should use some of that time to clean house, get projects done, and veg out in front of the tv…

But here is something else that can do with one of those days.  We can let ourselves sit quietly, without Facebook, without TV, without doing any chores, without even picking up a book and just sit quietly…i.e. lie down in the green pasture.

But Stephen you might say…I’ll be bored in about 2 minutes…

EXACLTY!

This is the point... our brain needs to stop for just a minute..stop being entertained, stop being distracted, and focus...focus on just one thing.

Part of the problem is that we have gotten so used to filling all of our time with “Stuff” to entertain ourselves, or prevent our brains from just shutting down a little bit.  When we do this, we cannot give our full attention to God.

So here is an exercise that you can do today, during a snow day (and you don’t have to do it all day long…but maybe for a half hour or even an hour or two), to help make your brain just stop for a minute

Just sit quietly…turn your phone off, turn your TV off, shut down the computer…and just sit.  What will happen is that at some point, you might start becoming bored, perhaps even fidgety…and when you get to this point, I want you to take a deep breath - maybe two and then close your eyes and relax.  Once your brain has given in and come to a stop, simply pray this…”Speak Lord, for your servant is listening”…

From there it is up to you what to do next. Perhaps you sit still for a while longer, perhaps you pray, or perhaps you even take a nap…but I want to encourage you to use this time that God has gifted us, to lie quietly beside the still water and listen for His voice.

If we don’t take time to sit quietly and rest when He makes us…then that gift will expire and we will have wasted what He has given us.

This IS the day that the Lord has made…Let us rejoice and be glad in it.

What will you do with your snow day?
